If I had to recommend just one superfood to someone who was battling cancer, it would be Reishi.
My husband is coming upon 5-years cancer-free this spring and I believe that Reishi in his morning smoothie has been a huge part of his recovery.
Reishi has the power to boost your immune system and protect from illness. It contains chemicals that fight against the formation of tumours and cancer.
It’s important that you take a good amount of Vitamin C with your Reishi in order to be able absorb it. I add Camu Camu to my husband’s smoothie along with Reishi powder because it’s very high in concentrated Vitamin C.
How much should you take?
Reishi comes in a variety of forms so it’s hard to say what the best dose is, but for high quality Reishi powder, generally the dose is 1-2 teaspoons a day with .5 to 1 teaspoon of Camu Camu.
Reishi is also available in tinctures (drops), which I’ve found to be far less potent. For the tinctures, I give Geoff 3 full tubes full every day; it’s not as potent but it’s convenient for traveling. You can also get dried chunks of the mushroom available to brew into a tonic or a tea. I like the powders and tinctures because you can easily add them to your green smoothie. Also, many forms of very potent reishi powders are very strong in flavour but will disappear completely when combined with delicious banana and fruit. If it’s especially bitter, you can add a tiny bit of stevia to your smoothie.
In addition to cancer, the following illnesses and conditions can all be treated by taking reishi:
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Chronic bacterial prostatitis
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
Chronic prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS)
High blood pressure
Has anti-inflammatory effects
Helps with pain relief
Is a strong anti-oxidant
