Naturally sweet pineapple pairs wonderfully with kale… and the best part of this smoothie might just be the intense, bright green colour!
Pineapple is a great fruit to use when you’re adding a lot of strong flavoured superfoods to your smoothie. It’s one of the more powerful flavours that you can use and it will help mask any bitterness from superfoods like reishi or ashwaganda, which can be a bit strong for many people’s palates. Plus, it’s just a delicious, tropical flavour on its own.
Use any type of kale that you have on hand. I like curly kale, but be sure to wash it very well.
Recipe – 2 servings
- 1 banana
- 6 big kale leaves, stem removed (use more kale if the leaves are small)
- 1.5 cups of pineapple
- 18 oz. of water
- 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder of your choice (optional)*
I like for at least one of the ingredients to be frozen. If neither your banana nor your pineapple are frozen, supplement the water with a few ice cubes.
If you have a high powered blender like a Vitamix, you can put all of your ingredients in and not worry about the order of things. However, if you’re working with a standard blender, you can use this order of operations to make things work more efficiently in your machine.
- Start with your liquid and your fruit: pineapple, banana, and the liquid. Pulse first, then blend.
- Add your protein powder and then the greens on top so that the powder doesn’t puff up. Pulse, then blend.
Enjoy! Keeps well for 36 hours in a mason jar in the refrigerator as needed.
