Do your hormones seem “off”? Adding maca powder to your morning smoothie can help!
For many years, my hormones were all out of whack. It started from being on the pill for many years, and then they got really crazy when I went off the pill while my body tried to figure out how to balance itself. In addition to a lot of physical side effects like acne and an irregular cycle, I found myself to be very emotional.
Maca to the rescue!
Maca is available in a variety of different forms, but I definitely recommend the powder which you can put right in your morning smoothie.
Maca is a root that’s related to ginseng. It’s actually native to Peru and the Peruvians have been taking it for thousands of years for its many health benefits. Us health foodies only started to catch on around 2011, but it’s been making waves as a powerful superfood ever since.
Benefits of Maca
As I mentioned, maca is great for regulating your hormones. This includes mood, menstrual problems, fertility, and sexual function. If you have any physical symptoms from hormonal imbalances, like acne, it can help with that too. It’s also known to help with energy levels so if you’re prone to the 3pm “crash”, maca powder could be a great option for you. It’s also good for memory.
But wait, there’s more! Maca is rich in antioxidants, helping to slow down and correct the signs of ageing. It’s also got cancer-fighting properties. Maca root powder contains a whole slew of vitamins and minerals; C, B, calcium, potassium, phosphorus.
How Much?
I take anywhere from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of maca every morning in my smoothie. It depends on how I’m feeling. When you’re first trying it out, you might want to start with just a teaspoon and see how you feel. If you aren’t used to it, at first it might affect you as a bit of a stimulant, like coffee, and give you more energy than you’re looking for. Start with a small amount and then increase the amount gradually. It’s not advisable to take more than a couple of tablespoons a day.
Flavour
Maca has a pleasant malty flavour that I really like. It’s often paired with chocolate and those flavours work well together, but I add it to all sorts of smoothie combinations, from berries to tropical flavours.
Have you had positive experiences with maca? I’d love to hear about it!

We love Maca powder. I put some in my iced coffee!
Oh that’s a smart idea! I can see how the flavours would work really well together.
